WAS : To begin with, can you introduce yourself ?
James Teej : I'm a musician/producer/dj from Canada,
currently living in Toronto.
WAS : Can you tell
me about your first contact with music ?
James Teej : I first heard acid
house on a cassette tape I got from a friend in the early 90's. From
that point forward I was set on a journey that took me across
electronic music and back. It's been love at first listen for me, and
through the ups and downs, music has always been there.
WAS : Why did you
choose the Djing career ?
James Teej : Djing was never
intended to be my career, I'm actually a graphic designer, and worked
professionally for over a decade. Production and Djing were my
serious hobbies, and I always ran nights, Djing at least once or
twice a week. Within the last 5 years it has now evolved and I'm
lucky enough to be doing this for a living at the moment.
WAS : What is the
musical style you find the nearest to yours ?
James Teej : House is what I
first fell in love with, and is what I would say guides me to this
day. That being said, I love all types of music, and have over the
years played, produced and been into a variety of different styles,
electronic and non-electronic. House is simply something I feel
natural doing, and I always seem to gravitate back to it.
WAS : Which artists
inspires you ?
James Teej : Right now there are
so many to name it would be hard to single out. I love what Maceo
Plex, Tale of Us, the whole Visionquest crew, Art Department, and
many of artists we're working with on our label (My Favorite Robot
Records). We seem to all be in a big network of underground artists
all pushing our respective sounds forward... music that is pushing
boundaries and keeping things interesting.
Outside of
'underground electronic' music, I am a huge fan of guys like Thom
Yorke of Radiohead, Trent Reznor of NIN, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, old
Joy Division, etc. etc. I could fill a whole page of musical
influences and still be missing some. I've grown up my whole life
listening to and learning about music, so my influences are across
the board. From funk, to disco, to rock, to jazz, to hiphop, to
electronic...
WAS : What is the funniest moment that you got during a party ?
James Teej : Too
many to single out... music is supposed to be fun. And our whole crew
is filled with pure jokers.
WAS : Which date is your best musical
memory ?
James Teej : Probably playing live at Fabric this
past year. Playing live is a lot different of an experience for me,
and it was amazing to do a proper live show at such an amazing club.
That memory will stick around for a while... at least until the next
time ;)
WAS : What is your current top 5 to
play ?
James Teej :
- Forest Fires – My Favorite Robot – Visionquest
- Goldemine (Droog & Inxec Remix) – Dead Seal – My Favorite Robot RecordsMFR039 - Dead Seal - Goldemine (Droog & Inxec Remix) - My Favorite Robot Records by My Favorite Robot Records
- B Side – Tanner Ross – No.19 Music
- Never – Scuba – Hotflush Recordings
- Can't Buy Love – Aquarius Heaven - Wolf+Lamb
WAS : Do you often use the mic on
live ?
James Teej : Right now I get on the mic when I'm really feeling it...
which luckily is happening more and more lately. I've been fortunate
enough to play some really amazing shows in interesting places around
the world... so if you see me on the mic, I'm basically having a
really good time.
WAS : Do you have any plans for the
future you would like to tell us about ?
James Teej : The next few months are
filled with touring, and between running the label (My Favorite Robot
Records), and writing/producing my solo stuff and the MFR material,
its going to be really really busy next few months. But all the hard
work is paying off and we've got some really stellar music coming out
over the next year... both our own and new additions to the label, so
its going to be quite the ride. The robot army is growing, and we are
definitely coming fast and furious into 2012...
WAS : The last but not the least...
Anything to add ?
James Teej : Thanks. x
