Interview : TIM EXILE

WAS : To begin with, can you introduce yourself ?
Tim Exile : I'm tim exile. I make music live. I sample myself, I sample you, and I invent machines that make music live. I like it organic...

WAS : How did you end up in electronic music, knowing you discovered music by learning classical violin ?
Tim : I find the sounds that you can generate electronically way more interesting than the one single sound that you can make with a violin... But I do like the amount of expression that you can achieve with a violin and I wanted to bring that to electronic music.

WAS : You are classified as a drum n' bass artist, (including waves with baroque tone). How would you describe, yourself, your music ?
Tim : It's not so much about the genre for me, it's about what happens when people get together to make music. I'm concentrating less and less on recording music, and more on making the machines to improvise it and involve the audience in that process.

WAS : What has motivated you to create your own softwares ? Were you unsatisfied with conventional DJ activities, so you preferred to create your personal instruments ?
Tim : Definitely. I used to dj when I was 14 but I got bored with it really quickly so I modified my turntables and they eventually broke. I wanted to perform electronic music... Not just play tracks. I got into production, where you could do whatever you wanted to with the sound but the tools didn't allow you to perform freely, so I made those tools myself.

WAS : Can you develop a little bit about "THE MOUTH" and "THE FINGER" ?
Tim : They're both really simple and that's what's so great about them. The finger is an fx box which you can play using your keyboard... Like your finger. The mouth is a synth/harmoniser/vocoder/auto tune which you play with your mouth. They've both got some great innovative features which are super easy to use... They're tools for everyone, not just geeks.

WAS : When did you start working with Native Instruments ? Could you tell us more about your collaboration with them ?
Tim : I first met with them in 2003 and I've been doing work with them on and off since then. Mostly making machines in reaktor. I made some of the fx for traktor, such as the beat masher and turntable fx, and of course the finger and the mouth.

WAS : During a gig, you sometimes sample classical orchestra or even playing with your public screams. It seems like you enjoy mixing different kind of music and/or sound, and create something unique ?
Tim : Definitely... It's all about taking what's there in the room and running with it, letting it transform the music that I'm making. It's like having tailor made music rather than buying it off the shelf.

WAS : Have you ever messed up while improvising during a live ?
Tim : The whole show is one long mess-up!

WAS : Which date is your best musical memory ?
Tim : Playing a surround sound piece I wrote on a huge 6 speaker rig... Bigger than the rig in berghain, in an aircraft hanger. It reduced me to tears of joy.

WAS : Do you have any plans for the future you would like to tell us about ?
Tim : More online jams will be happening soon, a new live show. And of course I have plans to make more machines too..

WAS : the last but not the least... Anything to add ?
Tim : Sign up to my mailing list! www.timexile.com
Thank you!
