INTERVIEW : FINAL CLUB

Thanks to a friend, I discovered Final Club, a noisy/pop/psyche/punk band composed by 4 american guys. For the release of their last track "Tread", the singer (Brendon) decided to answer my questions...

_________________________________________________________

WAS : To begin with, can you introduce yourself?
Final Club : My name is Brendon & I am the singer and rhythm guitar player. We have Anthony playing the drums. Chris playing the bass, and David playing lead guitar.

WAS : When did you come to make music together?
Final Club : We started as a band around 5 years ago. We had a different lead guitar player and bass player then. It kind of started randomly and I just got a group of people together and we just started playing. Thats where our first "Hot Gaze" EP came out. After that EP we got David to join the band and started recording the songs for "Blank Entertainment". David brought on a lot of recording knowledge so with the help of some friends we recorded that album in Anthony's house. Shortly after that our old bass player moved and I then asked Chris to play in the band. Chris is the one who helped get Blank Entertainment put onto vinyl and helped situate everything with touring. After a couple of tours we started writing and recording new material for our second release. We have been working on this for way too long, but now it is finally close to being done, and we are all very excited about it.

WAS : Final Club, Why did you choose this name?
Final Club : I chose the name, because I always found secret societies pretty interesting, and also fraternity secrets and codes are like a foreign world to me. The idea of a "final club" is it is the last thing you will ever join before you die. It just had such a strange world attached to the name.

WAS : What inspires you around you to make music?
Final Club : I feel this would different for each member of the band, but for me personally I am inspired by all of our amazing friends who play music. We were all playing in bands in Denton Texas, and every band that was coming out of there at the time was amazing. My friends still continue to inspire me and want to get better, and make more daring records.

WAS : Can you tell me more about your  last record « Blank Entertainment »? Is there a story or an anecdote behind this album?
Final ClubBlank Entertainment was written in a 3 week period as soon as David joined the band. We recorded it in Anthony's house. The album was really almost thrown together. We had no vision for the record or how it should sound. David was the one who put it all together and turned it into an actual album. We had the record done for about a year before it got pressed by Adagio 830. I was so excited to see that first record in the mail. I have always wanted to have a vinyl pressed, and it finally came true. I feel like with Blank Entertainment we really didn't know what we were doing but in the end it worked out.

WAS : You released a new track recently, can you tell me more about this track? Is there a beginning of a new album? Did you plan to make a video or something like that?
Final Club : Yeah, the new track is called Tread. This is part of the album that we have been taking forever on. We all ended up moving away from Denton and all live in different cities right now, so the album kind of got put on hold as different things came up. This song is kind of like a mantra for myself, to remind me how tense and anxious I am all the time, and how music is such a powerful tool in relieving some of that anxiety. We never planned on making a video. Our main goal was just to get it out there because we have been taking so long for this album. We wanted to let people know that the Final Club machine was still moving.

WAS : Which was your best memory with your band?
Final Club : I would say my favorite memory as a band was definitely going on our tours. We have a very nice family unit going on, and they were always a lot of fun. One moment in particular was awesome was when are friends in Orlando Florida got us free tickets to Universal Studios on our day off. It was really one of the coolest things! Nothing beats being on the road with your buddies and rocking in the free world.

WAS : What do you do when you don't make music?
Final Club : I do graphic design professionally and for fun. I live in New York City now so I just try to soak up all the art, music, and culture there is here. David is also a graphic designer living in Texas. I think he likes to play video games with his time off. Chris lives in New York as well. I would say his main source of entertainment is more music! He is currently operating a record label called Dull Tools and plays in a band Future Punx. He also DJ's and plays a bunch of shows. Anthony is living in Oklahoma and on his time off I would say that he is wishing to play more music. He is currently touring with two bands American Hate and Glow God. I think he works at a restaurant.

WAS : Do you have any plans for the future you would like to tell us about?
Final Club : We are hopefully getting this album released and then going on tour. We will see how everything falls into place. We would love to go to Europe and play some shows over there. As of now we are just going with the flow and everyone is happy that we have finally gotten this record done, and we are all proud of it. Each of us have some different music projects in the works so we are still playing music and still all good friends.

WAS : Anything to add ?
Final Club : You should check out Chris' label Dull Tools and his band Future Punx. Listen to Anthony play some mean drums in Glow God and American Hate. Thanks for having interest in Final Club and hopefully you will be hearing a new album soon.
