INTERVIEW : BESPHRENZ

I discovered BESPHRENZ at the end of 2019, by chance, with the track "Distorto" and I immediately fell in love with this band. While I spent most of my time listening to sad music, they arrived with their music : joyful, with good mood, they gave me the smile in a dark period of my life.
That's one of the reason why I wanted them on my blog.

CJ, one of the main vocalist, agreed to answer some questions...

_______________________________________________

WAS : Hello guys, how are you?
BESPHRENZ (CJ) : Bonjour Pauline! We are good, how are you?

WAS : Fine!! Very happy that you agreed to answer some questions for my blog!
To begin with, can you introduce each member of the band?
BESPHRENZ (CJ) : For sure, besphrenz is made up of four members - CJ, Taylor, Rob, & Jake

WAS : How did you met each others?
BESPHRENZ (CJ) : Taylor and I (CJ) met in grade 7, we remained best friends ever since. We met Rob in high school, he had this big shed in his backyard that we would hang out, make music, and party in. Jake came along a few years later, we met at a music venue here in a Philadelphia, but he fit right in with our friend group and we had great chemistry musically, so here we are.

WAS : And how you decided to make music together?
BESPHRENZ (CJ) : It started with Taylor and I making music at my moms house, just with a laptop and other people’s instrumentals we found online. Rob was making music so we linked with him and started creating together. Jake came on to play with us live and then began writing with us, we all enjoyed working together so we teamed up.

WAS : BESPHRENZ, like BEST FRIENDS?
BESPHRENZ (CJ) : Exactly! Haha, at the time we didn’t know what to call the project and being that we were friends for so long we just went with Besphrenz.

WAS : Your music is very happy, pop, acidulous, with some touch of hip hop / rnb.
For you, how do you describe your music ? Your influences ?
BESPHRENZ (CJ) : It’s cliche, but it’s really just a mixture of all of us and the things we’ve been influenced by. The first song we made together was “Tired Eyes” and I think that showcases a lot of the music we love. Whether it’s trap, hiphop, indie rock, pop, we just want to make whatever we like and whatever we feel like making in the moment. Music has been so cool the last few years because you have really seen it become quite genre-less.

WAS : Are there other things that can inspire you around you to make your music?
BESPHRENZ (CJ) : I think inspiration can come from many places, but I think traveling and new experiences really bring it on the most. Times when you feel uncomfortable but overcome it, it’s good to push yourself and your limits so that you can continue to grow.

WAS : Does your music tell a story? Can you tell me how do you work together to make music and have a result at the end?
BESPHRENZ (CJ) : I think it tells a story, it’s not always a descriptive narrative but sometimes it could be as simple as a guitar riff or a bass line that really makes you feel something. We almost always start with the music, Rob and Jake will start playing with ideas and that'll usually spark something. Taylor and I are the main vocalist in the group and we work pretty closely on the melody and lyrical parts. But all four of us typically sit in a room together and bounce ideas back and forth until they feel right.

WAS : Which was your best memory with your band?
BESPHRENZ (CJ) : This is a tough one, I think we all really just enjoy being in the studio together. It’s fun to have a drink and a smoke and just vibe out. There’s always a lot of laughs and jokes when we are together writing, so those moments are great. Playing live is always a lot of fun as well! It’s to connect with people and share those moments.

WAS : MY FAVORITE, « Lost in a wave » (for a night of love).
Who is the girl who is singing with you ? How do you worked together ?
BESPHRENZ (CJ) : A night of love!? That’s awesome! That girl is
a friend of ours named Joanna (aka J Boogie). We were all on
holiday together with a little studio set up at the vacation house
and wrote "Lost In A Wave" along with the rest of the Beach Haven
ep over the course of 3 days.

WAS : Do you remember the first record you ever bought?
CJ - Andrew Lloyd Weber - Phantom of the Opera
Taylor - chumbawumba - tubthumper
Jake- New Found Glory - Sticks N Stones
Rob - Yes - Classic Yes

WAS : Any plans for the future? Anything to add?
BESPHRENZ (CJ) : Tons of plans! We have a new single coming out in a few weeks, we’re really excited for that. We’ve also been recording a bunch of music over the last year so we will be releasing stuff throughout the whole year. We are also working on more video content and playing new cities.

WAS : You have to come in France.
BESPHRENZ : Oui! We’d love to come, do you recommend any venues?
Much love, thank you Pauline!
